Early life
Northern Atlanta Soccer Association (2003 – 2013)
In 2003, Emily Sonnett joined the North Atlanta Soccer Association (NASA) with her sister. Sonnett helped North Atlanta Soccer Association win the 2007 and 2008 Georgia State Cup Championship titles and the 2008 Region III League Championship title. Sonnett was selected for U-17 Best XI as a midfielder in the 2011 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship Series. NASA 12 Elite II became third in the championship.
Fellowship Christian School (2008 – 2012)
In 2008, Emily Sonnett joined Fellowship Christian School in Roswell, Georgia. She joined the Fellowship Christian’s varsity girl’s soccer team. In the 2011 Class A state tournament, Fellowship Christian’s varsity girls soccer team reached on the final four but lost the game against First Presbyterian Day School by 0-2. Sonnett became the captain in the same year. They played the 2012 Georgia state championship game under her captaincy but again lost the game with First Presbyterian Day School by 0-1.
Emily Sonnet was only the player in Fellowship Christian School to win the award. She was named the 2011-2012 Gatorade Georgia Girls Soccer Player of the Year and both 2011 and 2012 ESPN Rise 1st Team All-American. In 2011 Sonnett got selected for 2011 Youth All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
University of Virginia
In 2012 she went to the University of Virginia on an athletic scholarship. She played for the University of Virginia from 2012-2015. In 2012 the University of Virginia won the regular-season Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) title and made it to the 2012 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament. She played for center back, although she was recruited as the centre midfielder.
In 2014 Emily Sonnett played all 26 of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). She became runner up the ACC 2014 title, losing by 0-1 against Florida State, and Sonnett was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team. she scored five goals and three assists in the tournament. Sonnett became the tournament’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player and was also named a Third-Team NSCAA All-American.
She played the 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) but lost the tournament. They played2015 NCAA Women’s Tournament but lost the game in quarterfinals with Rutgers University in penalty kicks (6–7). Emily graduated with a degree in sociology from the University of Virginia, United States.
Club Career
Portland Thorns F.C. (2016 -2019)
Emily Sonnett club career started when Portland Thorns F.C. selected her in the 2016 NWSL College Draft on 15 January 2016. On 17 April 2016, she did her debut with the Thorns. Sonnett made her first club career goal in the NWSL championship semi-final against Western New York Flash. They won the 2016 NWSL championship.
In the 2017 season, Emily Sonnett scored the NWSL post-season goal against the Orlando Pride and won the game by 4-1. In the final match, with the help of Sonnett assist, Lindsey Horan scored the winning goal.
In 2018 Portland Thorns F.C. was out of the NWSL championship after losing North Carolina by 3–0. Emily played 22 games in the 2018 season. Although the team lost the tournament, Sonnett was the finalist for Defender of the Year 2018.
Loan to Sydney FC (2017)
In 2017 Emily Sonnett was sent in loan to Sydney FC for the 2017–18 W-League season On 2017 24 October. She scored in her first appearance through a penalty kick. She played 11 games and scored one goal.
Orlando Pride
Along with National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) rights to Caitlin Foord, Emily Sonnet was traded to Orlando Pride on 8 January 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the NSWL announced a delay at the 2020 NWSL season. On 22 June 2020, Orlando Pride withdrew from the tournament because of the club’s players and staff’s positive tests.

Youth national team (2011 – 2015)
Emily Sonnett started her international career when she was called in training camp for United States U18in June 2011 as a midfielder. In April 2011, she took part in Southeast’s Region III Olympic Development Program in Costa Rica. She was called in the United States women’s national under-23 soccer team training camps in December 2011. In the U-23 team, she played as a center back. In March 2014, she appeared in all three games of the 2014 Six Nations Tournament. She and her team won the tournament title by defeating Norway.
Emily again played for under 23 teams in the 2015 U-23 Six Nations International Tournament in La Manga, Spain. She was the captain in the game against Norway. She and her under-23 won for the second consecutive tournament title. In 2015 Emily Sonnett called for the senior team of the U.S. women’s national soccer team (USWNT) from Jill Ellis when she was still at the University of Virginia. She played her debut game on 25 October 2015 as a center back in the friendly match against Brazil, which was the part of the USWNT’s 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup victory tour.
In February 2016, Emily Sonnett was selected for the 2016 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament. She played in 2 games out of 5. 2016 Olympics
Emily Sonnett was selected for a friendly game against Colombia, Japan, and South Africa, and she played as the substitute for Becky Sauerbrunn in the match against Colombia. Sonnett was selected as the substitute for the USWNT at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, but the U.S. women’s national soccer team (USWNT) became out by losing with Sweden in a tie-breaker penalty shoot—out by 3-4. So, she could play in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. But she played in a friendly game in the post Olympics.
2017
In 2017 she was called for the training camp and selected for the 2017 SheBelieves Cup tournament, but she did not get any playing time. Unfortunately, she did not get the chance to play in any game in 2017.
Sonnett was called for January 2018 in a training camp with the USWNT. Finally, she got the chance to play in a friendly match against Denmark. She was again called for the 2018 pre-SheBelieves Cup training camp and selected the top 23 players. She played in 2 games out of 3 in the tournament.
In the 2018 Tournament of Nations, she got selected and played all three games and helped Alex Morgan’s goal against Japan. Again she got nominated for the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship and played three games out of 5. U.S. women’s national soccer team (USWNT) got selected for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Sonnett was called for training camp and got selected for the 2019 SheBelieves Cup. She played in two games out of three in the cup as a substitute for Kelley O’Hara.
2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup
Emily Sonnett got selected in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and got a chance to represent the United States. She made her debut in the world cup on the game against Chile on the substitute of Abby Dahlkemper in 82 minutes. United States won the the2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup by defeating the Netherlands by 2–0 in the finals. This was the fourth cup for the U.S. women’s national soccer team. Sonnett played in World Cup Victory Tour friendlies. She played in four matches out of five.
