Biography
Rebecca Sauerbrunn was born on June 6, 1985, in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Sauerbrunn was raised with her two older brothers, Grant Sauerbrunn and Adam Sauerbrunn. She started her football career at her very early age. At the age of 12, she played for JB Marine Soccer Club and won the Missouri State Cup four times. Sauerbrunn attended Ladue High School and played football, volleyball, and basketball from Ladue.
Early Life
Sauerbrunn attended the University of Virginia in 2003. She played in Virginia Cavaliers women’s soccer team from 2003 to 2007. She appeared in 90 games and scored two goals from Virginia Cavaliers women’s soccer team. in her first season in 2003, she played all 21 games in that season. Rebecca was also named ACC Freshman of the Year for 2003. She missed her 2004 season due to the 2004 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championships in Thailand.
Career
In the 2005 season, she appeared in all 25 games, and on September 16, she scored her first career goal with the Cavaliers against St. Bonaventure. Unfortunately, Virginia lost the game against UCLA on November 25. Even though they lose the 2005 season, she was also named to the ACC All-Academic Team, Sauerbrunn received All-ACC Second Team honors and NSCAA All-Region honors. Likewise, she played the 2006 and 2007 season from the virgin. She appeared in 21 games in the 2006 season and 23 appearances in the 2007 season. In the 2006 season, she was also named to the ACC All-Academic Team. In the 2007 season, Sauerbrunn was named NSCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year and ACC Player of the Year. She received NSCAA All-Region honors, NSCAA All-American First Team Honors, and All-ACC First Team honors. Rebecca made the Academic All-American team, the ACC All-Tournament Team, and the ACC All-Academic Team.
Club career
Sauerbrunn club career started in 2005. She played for the Boston Renegades in the W-League in 2005, and she made 11 appearances in the w-league in the 2005 season. Rebecca went Richmond Kickers Destiny in the W-League for the 2006 and 2007 seasons. She made 24 appearances from Destiny. Although being a defender, she scored three goals from Destiny.
She joined Washington Freedom and played the 2008 season w-league. But Washington Freedom joined the newly formed Women’s Professional Soccer league, where she played the 2009 season in Women’s Professional Soccer league. She appeared in all 20 games from the Washington Freedom and scored one goal against the Chicago Red Stars on April 11.
Sauerbrunn went to Røa IL in loan for three months to play in Toppserien, the top-level professional league for women in Norway. She made five appearances. In her first appearance on September 26, 2009, from Røa IL against the Kattem IL, she scored the goal in 13 minutes.
Washington Freedom
Sauerbrunn returned to Washington freedom in the 2010 season of Women’s Professional Soccer league. Rebecca played in all 24 games of the 2010 season. Washington Freedom was ranked in the fourth position in the 2010 season of the Women’s Professional Soccer league.
Washington Freedom was bought by Dan Borislow on December 2, 2010, and changed its name to magicJack. MagicJack played the 2011 season of the Women’s Professional Soccer league. Sauerbrunn stayed in the team and played for MagicJack. She also played 13 games for MagicJack. MagicJack ended up in the third position. MagicJack was terminated by the WPS Board of Governors on October 25, 2011, on the accuse of “unprofessional and disparaging treatment of his players to failure to pay his bills.” On November 9, 2011, All the player was released from the contract and became free agents.
Sky Blue FC
For the 12 seasons of Women’s Professional Soccer league, Sauerbrunn signed for Sky Blue FC. But the 2012 season got suspend because of an ongoing legal dispute with the termination of magicJack.
Sauerbrunn joined D.C. United Women in march 2012 for the 2012 season of w-league. She played only four games because of her national team obligations at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
FC Kansas City
On January 11, 2013, Sauerbrunn was sent to FC Kansas City via the NWSL Player Allocation to play in the National Women’s Soccer League, a new professional league. She was the co-captain of the team. she played 19 games and in the 2013 season. FC Kansas City ended in second place. Rebecca was awarded “Defender of the Year” for the 2013 season and was also named the 2013 NWSL Best XI.
In the 2014 season, she played in all 22 games and scored one goal: her National Women’s Soccer League career against Washington Spirit. Sauerbrunn helped Kansas City defeat Seattle Reign to win the championship on August 31. Rebecca Sauerbrunn was awarded Defender of the Year for the 2014 season, and She was also named to the 2014 NWSL Best XI.
In the 2015 season, she played only 11 games and missed nine-game because of national team obligations at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Rebecca helped Kansas FC to finish in the third position in the league. Sauerbrunn was also named to the 2015 NWSL Best XI for the third time and she became the first player in NWSL history to win a three-year league award in a row.

International career
Rebecca Sauerbrunn started her national team journey from 2000. She joined in U-16 women’s national team from 2000 to 2002 and moved to the U-19 national team in 2003. She played her first match on May 27, 2003, against Canada and won by 6-1.
U-19 World Championship
In 2004 she trained for the U-19 World Championship. She was the co-captain of the team. They reached in the finals by winning Mexico but lost the game against Canada in the 2004 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship. The United States took third place by defeating Brazil by 3-0, whereas Germany won the title. Sauerbrunn was named to the Tournament All-Star Team by the FIFA Technical Study Group.

She joined the training camp with the national team. she debuts on July 31, 2012, in a group match against Korea DPR. The United States won the gold medal in the 2012 Olympic. She consistently joined in the national team from 2013 and 2014.
In the 2015 FIFA Women’s world cup, Sauerbrunn played for the United States. she played all the 25 matches in the world cup; she was the only player to do so. She was the key player for the united states to win the games. She helped to defeat Japan 5–2 in the Women’s World Cup final. United States won the 2015 FIFA Women’s world cup.

Sauerbrunn became captain for the 2016 summer Olympics of United States women’s national team on January 9, 2016. The United States got qualified in the Olympics. On February 21, she made her 100th appearance for the national team in the game against Canada. However, the United States was defeated by Sweden in penalty kicks and lost the Olympic. She was named to the 2016 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Best XI.
Rebecca Sauerbrunn was called for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in May 2019. There she played six-game out of 7. The United States won the title by defeat the Netherlands 2–0 in the final. They also won the World Cup titles and the fourth time.

Sauerbrunn was featured in the EA Sports’ FIFA video game series in FIFA 16 along with her national team, which was the first time in the history of FIFA game to feature women players.
