Casey Marie Short is an American football player. She plays for Chicago Red stars of NWSL, National Women’s Soccer League as a defender, and she represents the United States at the international level. She had also played for clubs such as Boston Breakers and Avaldsness IL in Norway’s top-division league. Casey is best known for CONCACAF Women’s Championship 2018, and she is famous for being named as 2008 PARADE All-American.

Casey has been playing football since her young age. She has received many honors and has achieved her goals in her junior and senior years.

Naperville Central High School

Casey Short attended her high school from Naperville Central high school, Naperville, Illinois. There she earned four honor, and she was named as Illinois State Scholar. Short was also named as PARADE All-American 2008 and was twice named as NSCAA/Adidas Youth All-American in the years 2016 and 2017. She also helped her high school team to win the Illinois state cup championship. During her high school year, she ran track and also won three state championships. She won two state championships in 8000 m run and one state championship in 400 m dash. And she is also the first girl in Illinois to win both runs Class AA track in the same year. 

Florida State University, 2008 – 2012

After completion of her high school, Casey Short attended Florida State University from the year 2008 to 2012. Casey completed her bachelor’s degree in Criminology with a minor in Sociology and completed her master’s degree in Sports Management. During these four years of bachelors, she has played 81 soccer matches and scored seven goals. At Florida State University, Casey Short played for the Florida State Seminoles women’s soccer team. Casey Short played collegiate soccer for the Florida State Seminoles.

During the freshman season 2008, Casey Short was a starting player in 18 games out of 23. She scored two goals with six assists and was one of the two freshmen who played in every game of the season 2008. Casey played in the 2008 NCAA College Cup before she was eliminated in the quarter-final match by Notre Dame. Despite being injured and missed the first six games of the season, Casey Short ranked sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). She played in 7 games out of 13 games, and she was Florida State’s all-time leader for assists in ACC play. Also in 2009, Casey played for the club Chicago Red Eleven of USL W-League. 

In the year 2010, Casey suffered from a season-ending injury and red-shirted the season. During her final year in 2012, she transitioned into playing soccer as an outside back and was a crucial player in the defensive part. She even helped to set a new NCAA record. Short played in NCAA College Cup 2012 and was named NSCAA Southeast All-Region First Team, Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV First Team, NSCAA Scholar All-American Second Team, All-ACC Second Team, NSCAA South Scholar All-Region First Team. Short also earned ACC Academic Honor Roll four times, and she was named to FSU’s President’s List twice.

Club career

Casey Short started her club career in the year 2013. She has played for soccer clubs such as Avaldsnes Football Club, Boston Breakers, and Chicago red stars. Short began playing for clubs right after she graduated from Florida State University in 2012.

Boston Breakers, 2013

Right after her graduation, Casey Short started playing soccer for the club Boston Breakers in the year 2013. Despite being selected by the Boston Breakers, she could not play at the 2013 NWSL College Draft. She suffered from a knee injury in the season 2013. Casey could not play in the National Women’s Soccer League because of two season-ending injuries.

Chicago red stars, 2014

In the season 2014, Casey Short was acquired by the club Chicago Red Stars. But she suffered another season-ending injury before the season 2014 started. So she could not play any matches in 2014.

Avaldsnes Football Club, 2015

After a two-season injury break, Casey Short began playing soccer for the Avaldsnes Football club in the season of 2015. She played in the Norwegian Toppserien League. At the 2015 NISO Award, she was also honored as one of the top 11 soccer players in the Norwegian Toppserien League. Casey short appeared in 27 game plays while playing from this club in the identical season.

Chicago Red Stars, 2016 –

After a successful appearance in Avaldsnes IL, Chicago Red Stars signed Casey Short to play in the 2016 NWSL season. She played as a defender in every match and scored two goals in the season 2016. Casey was also named as the league’s Second XI team for the season. In the season 2017, she played 22 matches for the Chicago Red Stars. She was also named as the NWSL Team of the Month for May, June, and July. And at the end of the season 2017, she was named 2017 NWSL Best XI. Because of her ankle injury in the 2018 SheBelieves Cup, Casey Short missed the first ten games of the 2018 National Women’s Soccer League season.

International career

Casey Short has not only been active in the national game, but she has also been playing international matches in the football industry. She has played matches against many countries all over the world. Casey firstly played international games competing United States in the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup held in Germany.

2016

Short has represented the United States (US) on the senior national team as well as in many youth national teams including national teams under-16, under-17, under-20, and under-23. In October 2016, she first received her international call to the senior squad by her head coach Jill Ellis. She made her first senior international debut on 19 October 2016 in a match against Switzerland women’s national football team. And after four days she played another game against Switzerland as a friendly game.

2018

Casey Short competed with the national team, where she played eight matches at the Tournament of Nations. She also played in two games during the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship and helped the United States to qualify for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup held in France. 

2019

Surprisingly, Casey Short was not included on the 23-player roster for the 2019 World Cup in May. After the US World Cup win in August 2019, she was named to the roster for the Victory Tour video games towards Portugal. She was named to the first training roster of head coach Vlatko Andonovski of the national team. In October 2019, she played her first friendly matches against Portugal and Sweden. 

2020

In February 2020, Casey Short was named to the roster for the 2020 SheBelieves Cup. Casey was a substitute within the 61st minute, and she helped the workforce win 3-1 through the US last match against Japan.
